“I am the vine; you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.”
John 15:5
- Abide = to wait, to endure without yielding, to bear patiently: tolerate, to accept without objection, to remain stable or fixed in a state, to continue in a place.
- Abide is a permanent residence; it is not a temporary place to stay.
- Branches do not naturally choose the vine. Here the followers of Christ have the choice to abide in Him.
- If we abide in Him – We bear fruits; fruits bring others to the vine and enjoy it. ( Bearing fruit of the spirit [character fruits] will attract people to Christ)
- If the choice is not to abide in the vine, the branches wither, discarded, shrivel, and burned.
- The branch can not exist without the vine (the stem) – the vine provides nutrients and life.
