“But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust.” https://www.bible.com/100/jas.1.14.nasb
- Desire is not bad, though every desire demands the will of God according to the Word of God.
- Desire is essential for human life. Life is not sustained in the world without desire.
- Desire is a bait – in terms of lust and passion. Attractions and pleasures of temptation.
- The source of temptation is from within a person => own desires (evil) and lust (inner craving).
- Epithymia [ ἐπιθυμία ] = a great desire for someth., desire, longing, craving => it is singular [1]
- This inner craving draws a person out (exelkomenos) like a fish drawn from its hiding place and then entices him (deleazomenos, from the verb deleazō “to bait, to catch a fish with bait, or hunt with snares”). So a person both builds and baits his own trap. [2]
- Believers are not excused from the temptation. ( …each one….)
- “But each one is tempted when he is dragged away, enticed and baited [to commit sin] by his own [worldly] desire (lust, passion).” James 1:14
- Just as a wrong reaction to testing will obstruct spiritual growth and maturity, so will a wrong response to temptation. [3]
- “Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death. [4]
