Give us this day our daily bread – Matt 6:11
- Even though we don’t pray this prayer daily, God still answers our prayers and gives food everyday, how gracious is our Lord.
- The verb ‘give’ used in Matthew 6:11 (NT Background Comm): epiousios means sufficient for the day.
- Here ‘Bread’ is used to represent a common term for food.
- Even though we eat the meal and satisfied, we get hungry again. Hunger is a never satisfying activity until we die. God wants us to pray this daily – means – our prayers are daily as long as we live.
- In the Old Testament, God provided manna for the people, on daily basis. Can we trust God on daily basis? God does not want us to be storehouses, But He wants Himself to be storehouse for us.
- Food may satisfy for a few hours, but still, we crave again and again. Same way, We must have a hunger for the Word of God. we can eat until there is no more room for food. But the Word of God, the spiritual food though you eat without stopping you will have more room.
- Jesus did not teach them a prayer like this “Give us our daily Word” – The Word is already given and you just need to feed yourself. Word of God has life in it and it keeps fresh every time we meditate and feed the souls.
