Right thinking and right living

Right thinking and Right living

The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things and the God of peace will be with you. Philippians 4:9

  • Three-way to acquire knowledge and wisdom from other godly people => Learn, hear, see. Learning and receiving one set of acts the same as hearing and seeing another.
  • “Learned and received reflect Paul’s Jewish tradition, where what is learned is thus received by students;”[1] Paul set his life as an example for others to follow. ( Do we live a life as an example for others? ) “Facts in the head are not enough; we must also have truths in the heart. In Paul’s ministry, he not only taught the Word but also lived it so that his listeners could see the truth in his life. Paul’s experience ought to be our experience. We must learn the Word, receive it, hear it, and do it. “But be ye doers of the Word, and not hearers only” (James 1:22).”[2]
  • According to Paul – knowledge always led to responsible Christian living. ((Richard R. Melick, Philippians, Colossians, Philemon, vol. 32, The New American Commentary (Nashville: Broadman & Holman Publishers, 1991), 150.)) In v8. (Philippians 4:8) Paul mentions standard of life => pure, honorable, right, lovely, repute, excellence, and worthy of praise. In v9. Paul describes the practice of these in life.
  • God’s presence is with those who intentionally obey what they received. Here Paul, as a leader of the church, his knowledge was so beyond the ordinary people.
  • We need God’s Word inside of our heart to practice. You cannot separate outward action and inward attitude. [3]
  • God’s Word also can be passed to others by sharing too. (another way – Reading the Bible)
  • Peace here mentions God’s peace and help to those who would like to practice the Word. ““God of peace” obviously does not mean a peaceful God. In the Bible, the emphasis in not upon the qualities of God but upon his acts. In this case, God is the one who gives us peace[4]
  • Biblical Practical discipline will eliminate mental disorders.
